Book in a Bag

“The single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children.” Jim Trelease

Dear Parents,

One of our goals at St. Thomas More School is to build a community of readers. We don’t just want to teach children to read, we want them to love to read. We hope to make lifelong readers and this process starts at home. Educators unanimously agree that reading aloud to your children is the single most important daily activity that you can do to help them develop as readers, and that is what our Book in a Bag Program is all about. Reading aloud at home builds memories that will last a lifetime for you and your child. It is time spent together in a loving, sharing way. Think of the first book you ever “fell into.”

For many of us, those were books our parents read to us and those are the books we buy for our own children. Finding time in our busy daily schedules is not always easy; however, this small investment of your time will reap great rewards. STM’s Book in a Bag program makes it easy for you. When school begins, your child will bring home a personalized bag with a library book inside for you to read together.

Please return the ‘book in a bag’ on the next school day. Each day your child will receive another book from the classroom rotation.

Your teachers and I are very excited about this program and we hope you will be too. If you have any questions about this program or any library program, please feel free to contact me at
