Ms. Sheckels' 4th Grade Class

My name is Emily Sheckels, and I'm a 4th grade teacher here at St. Thomas More Cathedral School.  I have a Virginia Teaching License for grades PK-6, with teaching experience in first, second, and fourth grades, and I I currently live in Alexandria, VA with my dog,.
I am originally from Fredericksburg, VA, where I went to Catholic elementary school and public high school.   I attended Mary Washington College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Music while also enrolled in the Elementary Education program, and I continued my studies beyond college, earning a Master of Science in Elementary Education.
Following college, I taught at Anne E. Moncure Elementary School in Stafford County, Virginia for 6 years, enjoying the rewarding experience of teaching 1st and 2nd grades.  My favorite subject to teach was reading, as guiding students through the process of learning to read was incredible!  I worked with English language learners, collaborated with our math specialist to implement hands-on math instruction, and continued professional development and implementation in instructional technology.
In 2013, after six years at public school, I began teaching at St. Thomas More School in 2nd grade.  In 2021, I moved to 4th grade, beginning a "new adventure" in upper elementary.  My favorite parts of 4th grade are exploring Science with my students, sharing my love of children's literature, and helping guide students through creating projects where they can express their learning through creativity.  I'm also a fan of math, enjoying teaching students about fractions!
Professionally, I enjoy learning about educational technology, STEM, the arts, and how to incorporate these subjects into our 4th grade curriculum.  In addition to teaching 4th grade, I am Assistant Director to our church's Youth Choir and play piano at School Mass.    I share my students' love for music, robots, reading, and Legos!    Personal interests include music, art, reading, and spending time with my doggie roommate.
