Dear Parents,
The recent tragic events at Michigan State certainly hit home for me. My youngest son is a senior there and was on the phone with me as he sheltered in place behind gym equipment while listening to reports of shots being fired, and sirens blaring. It not only gave me pause, but made me examine our security measures, yet again.
Our school has a double vestibule that only allows entry from the administration spaces, a bullet proof glass partition that only opens internally. All other doors are locked and can only be accessed with a school issued FOB or key. Those same doors and all ground level windows are reinforced with break-proof film that is guaranteed to impede penetration of intruders. We have cameras that survey all areas of the school grounds and are present in all school hallways, entrances and common areas. We have a new intercom system that allows all teachers and staff to broadcast to the entire school should there be need for alert, and has a direct line to the Arlington Police Department. We have placed a pin pad enter system on the Library and offered the Arlington Police the opportunity to use our library for restrooms, paperwork, coffee or water. This service ensures that we have police cars about our campus at all times of day and night. We have a retired police officer who patrols our grounds, the church and school while students are present. We conduct fire, intruder, and weather drills from the school and the church on a monthly basis and our teachers carry walkie talkies whenever out of their classroom in order to report emergencies.
I guess what I am trying to relay is that as my heart raced for two or three minutes on Monday evening, and as I am saddened for the parents of the victims of this senseless shooting, I am confident that we are protecting the students of STM.
Chat soon,
Cath
