Covid FAQ
Will we have to complete Magnus every day?
No, at least not for now. If outbreaks become a problem or a high rate of students are sent to school with symptoms of illness, we may have to resume this practice. Please don't send ill children to school. Please don't treat a fever in the morning and send your child to school.

I've kept my student home sick. What do I need to do to return?
This year, students need EITHER a note from a health care provider clearing their return OR a negative home or lab test for Covid-19. Records should be sent to the clinic at [email protected].

We have decided we would like our child to wear a mask to school every day. Is this allowed?
Once again this year masks are optional. Student worn masks must be disposable surgical/kn95/n95 masks or similar and should be regularly replaced. Provision of masks is a responsibility of parents. Note the STM gaiters are retired and are not a suitable substitute for surgical masks.

My student has tested positive for Covid. Now what?
Your student will need to stay home from school for AT LEAST 5 days, with testing day as day zero. They may return on day six provided symptoms are improving  and they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of medication. One days 6-10 your child must wear a mask at school, unless they can provide a negative test on day 5 AND a negative test 48 hours later, at which point they may shorten their mask usage. Your child's classmates' parents will be notified by email of a case in the class (this also happens for strep, flu, lice, hand-foot-and-mouth, etc.). Classwork during the absence will be provided at the discretion of teachers, but time will be allowed for makeup work following the student's return to class.

Someone in our household has tested positive for Covid. Can my child still come to school?
Yes, but they must wear a mask for ten days during the isolation period of their household member.

I got an email at home that my student has a classmate who has tested positive for Covid. Now what happens?
New this year, "exposed" students and staff may choose whether or not they want to wear a mask for ten days following exposure at school. They should continue to monitor for symptoms and test if symptoms of Covid appear. In the case of an especially large and/or difficult to control outbreak, students and staff may be asked to mask.

Under what conditions could my child be asked to wear a mask at school?
Students presenting with respiratory symptoms may be asked to mask at clinic staff discretion if visiting the school clinic. Masks will be provided under these circumstances. Additionally, if a household member has tested positive for Covid, your student may continue to attend school, but must wear a mask for ten days and monitor closely for symptoms. Per VDH guidelines, in the setting of a large and difficult to eradicate outbreak (ala spring 2022), students and staff may be asked to mask after repeated exposures at school.

Will kids be asked to stay many feet apart this year?
No, we are moving away from enforced "social distancing." However, very regular hand hygiene and surface cleaning will continue to be parts of our daily school routine.

Where will my student eat lunch this year?
We are happy to announce the cafeteria is reopened for everyone! Students will be seated by specific seating arrangements and a period of silence for eating will be observed for the first part of the lunch period.
