One School One Book

Dear Students and Families of St. Thomas More,

Welcome to the One School, One Book program, generously sponsored by the PTO. One School, One Book aims at creating a shared reading experience for families and students. This year, we are reading Katherine Applegate’s Crenshaw. This modern story tells about fifth grader, Jackson, whose family is going through
tough financial times. On the verge of losing their home, his old imaginary friend, Crenshaw, a large cat, begins to appear.

“Jackson and his family have fallen on hard times. There's no more money for rent. And not much for food,
either. His parents, his little sister, and their dog may have to live in their minivan. Again.
Crenshaw is a cat. He's large, he's outspoken, and he's imaginary. He has come back into Jackson's life to
help him. But is an imaginary friend enough to save this family from losing everything?”

The values of kindness, empathy and honesty are so needed today and ones we teach and model in our STM community as we honor the unique backgrounds, personalities and individuality of our students. By brave openness and kindness to one another, STM will recognize that someone is knocking on our door, Christ the teacher, in the faces and experiences of our classmates and staff. Books will go home today and tomorrow with the youngest of each family. Each day on the morning announcements, Mrs. Pacheco will ask a few questions about the chapters. Students are invited to write down answers and send them to the office. Correct answers will enter the class in a drawing to win a gift card for their homeroom. Friday, Sept. 2, I will ask about Ch. 1-3. Tuesday will be Ch. 4-9, and five chapters a day after that.

I hope you enjoy reading, and that in this way, we will grow together by reading and thinking about something in common. Discussions and questions are welcome!

Sincerely,
Stephanie Pacheco
