Conversation Starters for Discussion about Mask Choices at School

“Every student at STM has adults in their home life who love them deeply and have a huge responsibility in helping them grow up. Whether it's a mom or a dad or a mom and dad or grandparents or another caring adult, they are the ones who need to take care of their children. In every family, in every home, what it looks like to take the best care of your children will be different. Families are like the people they are made up of– no two are exactly the same. You might already see this at school in a lot of ways–different types of food in lunches, different activities on the weekends, maybe even a different language spoken in their home. However! Every family at STM is a part of God’s creation, loved and chosen by Him to follow His way. Part of the reason we choose STM for you is because it is a place where there is lots of love–from your adults at home to your teachers, to Fr. Kevin, Fr. Posey, and the Bishop, they all love you and want to help you grow up (even if you didn’t feel it in Scantron!).

Starting on Monday you will see some students who are wearing the STM uniform differently from how they have so far this year– some won’t be wearing a face covering. Other students will continue to wear their face covering. The decision for those students to no longer wear this part of the uniform was made by the adults who know and love them at home and have the ultimate responsibility for helping them grow into adults.

In our home we have decided the best thing is for you to _________. It may feel confusing or uncomfortable for you to see even good friends who are all doing something different than we are. The best thing for you to do is to know that their adults, just like your adults, have made the decision they feel is best using all the love in their hearts. Being a grown up is hard, but being a grown up who is responsible for children growing up is the hardest best job God can give a person.”
