One School, One Book
This school year St. Thomas More is once again participating in a community reading project called
“One School, One Book”.
“One School, One Book is a program designed to create a shared reading experience within a single elementary school community. A single chapter book is chosen, every family in the elementary school receives a copy, and every family reads that book at home over the course of a single month.
Activities at school coordinate, promote, and enrich the shared reading experience.”*
The book we have chosen to read is The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White. We feel that the values in this book reflect our school values of understanding, acceptance, friendship and hard work. The PTO has very generously offered to purchase a copy of this book for every family in the school.
All families, from Kindergarten to 8th grade, will have one month to read the book at home. Each classroom will have a variety of activities that will promote reading and encourage a deeper understanding of the book. The teachers will have a kick-off assembly and begin the discussion Thursday morning, September 7. Look for the books to come home that day. They will be sent with the youngest child in each family. Thursday, October 5th we will have a concluding assembly.
It has been quite a challenge to find a book that would appeal to both a Kindergartener and an eighth grader. I would ask parents in Kindergarten and 1st grade to preview the book for your little ones. You know your child best and if you feel it is too long for them, feel free to edit your reading in a manner appropriate to your child’s age. The beauty of this book is that you do not have to read every word to understand the greater meaning.
Again, I want to thank the PTO for agreeing to work on this project and for their generous donation to the families of STM.
