St. Thomas More Cathedral School

2nd Grade

St. Thomas More Cathedral School follows the Curriculum Guidelines of the Diocese of Arlington Catholic Schools. The core curriculum consists of instruction in the following subjects: Religion, Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies

Students also participate in the following special classes: Art, Spanish, Library Skills, Technology, Physical Education, Music

A variety of instructional methods are used including cross-curricular units, cooperative groups, direct instruction, discovery learning and hands-on activities. Homework is assigned to review lessons and practice skills.

The instructional program is supported through the following: Title I Program, Resource Program, Educational Field Trips, Guest Speakers, Community Service

A word from the teachers about 2nd grade...

Second grade is an exciting year! Most importantly, we have First Penance in the winter and First Communion in the spring! The students work very hard in preparation and even attend a retreat with Father Rippy. Second grade has fun studying Canada and even enjoys a special visitor; the Super Canadian! We also enjoy our annual field trip to the National Museum of the American Indian.

My name is Liz Mullan and I am originally from northern Maryland. I then moved to Atlanta, Georgia where I taught in a Catholic school for 4 1/2 years. I taught 7th and 8th grade religion for half a year and then taught 3rd and 5th grade the remainder of the 4 years. After that experience, I decided to move to Ireland to work in an all girls’ boarding school as the Dean of Discipline. I was there for 2 years and was able to travel as well while I was there. It was a wonderful experience. I moved back to America and taught in another Catholic school outside of Baltimore where I taught 4th grade for 1 year. This school was downsizing, which then brought me down to the diocese of Arlington where I found St. Thomas More Cathedral School where I am very excited to be teaching 2nd grade!
